Other African Cichlids

Other African Cichlids

Beyond the famous cichlids of the great East African rift lakes, the rest of the African continent offers an incredible diversity of species. These are primarily found in rivers, streams, and smaller lakes across West and Central Africa, differing significantly from their cousins in Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika.

Natural Habitats and Water Parameters

Many of these species, such as the popular Pelvicachromis (e.g., Kribensis), inhabit soft and slightly acidic waters in forested regions. Others, like Hemichromis (Jewel Cichlids), are hardier and found throughout vast river systems. In the aquarium, they typically require a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 and temperatures of 24-27°C. Since many of these fish live in dense vegetation, a well-planted tank with plenty of driftwood and hiding spots is essential.

Behavior and Social Structure

Unlike the many mouthbrooders found in the rift lakes, many riverine cichlids from the rest of Africa are cave spawners or substrate spawners. They often form strong pair bonds and exhibit impressive parental care, with both parents participating in guarding the eggs and fry. They are generally less aggressive than Malawi cichlids but can become very territorial during the breeding season.

Diet and Maintenance

These cichlids are often omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet of quality flakes, pellets, and especially frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp, which stimulate their natural hunting instincts and enhance their colors. Maintaining high water quality is vital, as river-dwelling species are often accustomed to flowing water with high oxygen levels.
