aetacara dorsigera, commonly known as the Redbreast Acara, is one of the most peaceful and rewarding dwarf cichlids from South America.
During a period of expanding my collection of South and Central American cichlids, this species was one of my first additions. It is particularly fascinating due to its dramatic color changes; while generally subtle in appearance, the chest area explodes into a deep, vibrant red during courtship and spawning.
As open substrate spawners, they typically deposit their eggs on flat stones or broad plant leaves. They are renowned for their exemplary parental care. To thrive, they require an aquarium with plenty of driftwood, leaf litter, and dense vegetation to provide a sense of security. They are an excellent choice for a community tank as they are significantly less aggressive than most other cichlids.
